All FIVE of my kids got into and finished arguably THE top Magnet Program after I took a “New Parents As Teachers” class from Burton L. White, Ph.D., where I learned about mirrors, balls, and other things you’ll learn about in the book below. Wheel down on the linked page to see what the MSTC Magnet students accomplish! Amazon book reviewers said, “My child tested in the 99%’le and then got a STEM Ph.D. and is now teaching at a university.” “My oldest son is in medical school, my second not far behind, and my third is keeping up with her two brothers…This book is part of my secret.” and “My son’s IQ is 147”. Dr. White claimed that kids in his program in language and intelligence tested 75th percentile nationally on one measure and 85th percentile on another (p.353)
Mirrors change images as they are moved. Dr. White does NOT recommend busy boxes, saying “A mirror will provide twenty times more enjoyment than any commercially available busy box.” (p. 110) Mirrors also help to distract during diaper changes. They lead to self awareness, which is what separates humans from animals!

The American Sign Language sign for milk is squeezing your dominant hand, as if you are milking a cow, a goat, or a human breast. Once the baby learns that, they realize they can communicate with you via their hands! Months before they can talk! Just remember to say what you are signing so they learn the spoken words also. Dr. White says, “Children of hearing-impaired parents acquire far more words in sign language before their first birthday than the hearing child in a typical family situation acquires receptive vocabulary.” (p. 322)

La Leche League is made of volunteers in 80 countries around the world dedicated to having mothers nurse their babies at least until 6 months old. The book extolls the benefits of breastfeeding and has the “Safe Sleep 7” on page 307.
Pages 110 – 130 discuss how Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is nearly non existent in China, Japan, Bangladesh, and other Asian countries where babies sleep with their parents. The West could and should learn from them.
Massage can relieve colic, among many other benefits, such as improve bonding. Maximize intelligence? Hard to say, and impossible to prove. This book was written by the developer of the method.
Dr. White says, “The ball is the single most popular toy during the second year of life. It is great for learning about the movement of objects; for practicing throwing, chasing, picking up, and carrying; and for getting someone else to play along. The epitome of elegance in babies’ toys.” (p. 305) I observed this when I went to a birthday party and my gift was a ball for the 1 year old. It was all he wanted to play with, ignoring everyone else’s much more expensive gifts.
